A Highly Esteemed German Citizen Departed

Henry Friedrich Gehrke was born at Elze amt Burgdorf, Hanover, Germany April 25, 1828. He, like his father before, him was a parochial school teacher. He came to America in 1857, locating at Putten Hill in Addison township on the farm now known as the Henry Finke place. He taught the Lutheran school there one year, after which he devoted his future life to farming. In 1857 he married Mrs. Dorotha Heuer. For a time they lived on her farm now known as the Fred Rittmueller place. Then he bought the McElhose farm, now owned y his son, Henry Gehrke in Elk Grove. After a few years there, he moved near the two churches in Addison, where he ran a store about five years, then moved to Arlington Heights where he lived five years in the house now occupied by Lorenz Traub. Then he moved back to his farm in Elk Grove and worked it 11 years until his son was married in 1890 then the old people retired and spent the rest of their days with their daughter, Mrs. Henry Fiene at the Heights.

Mr.s Gehrke died July 18, 1907, aged 83 years, one month and 8 days. Mr. Gehrke died after six months failing health, May 18, 1911, aged 83 years and 23 days. the funeral took place Sunday afternoon from his late home to St. Peter's Church; burial beside his wife, father and mother in Arlington Heights Lutheran cemetery.

He leaves surviving two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Mumme of St. James, Minn. who was here and helped care for himn the last two weeks of his life and Mrs. Henry Fiene and one son Henry Gehrke, 23 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
