narcissus catherine houston was the daughter of william henry houston and lucretia alabama cooper houston, the widow of jim hamilton who had been killed in the civil war. narcissus, or shug as she was called, lived in limestone arkansas with her parents and siblings adaline, william, andrew jackson[jack],jane, margaret paralee, george, martha[mott], john, benjamin and charlie. [charlie died at the age of 12. a boulder rolled over him that had become dislodged when he shot at a rabbit]

in 1887 in jasper, arkansas shug married c.c.[lum] casey of calispell, montana. the couple moved to montana for a short time, but shug was lonesome for her family, so they moved back to limestone where their 8 children were born. shug suffered the heartbreak of losing her first 3 babies to the mysterious malady of "stomach trouble" which claimed infants before their second summer. shug was so desperate when her third child showed symptoms, she took the baby to a doctors home and refused to leave. days later the baby died anyway. somehow she found the courage to have more children. the following 5 survived; nettie, creasey artie lou, vera agnes, era wilma and ira lee.

nettie married carl albert noe and moved to missouri. creasey married walter stone and remained in limestone while the rest of the family moved to box near vian, oklahoma in 1919. at the time box had a school, a cotton gin and a large general store with a post office.

vera later married william frye[buck] stewart, era married william garrett hutchings and ira married evelyn compton. ira married a second time to nettie dickerson.

shug was an humble, hard working wife and mother. she lived for her family and was especially close to ira's children, kathleen and jack. she died in vian in 1948.
