SERVICES HELD FOR VIAN MATRIARCH

Funeral services for Era Hutchings, 90, of Vian were held Friday, October 27, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Vian Freewill Baptist Church in Vian. Reverend Laymon Garrison, Reverend Bo Smith and Reverend Charles Smith officiated and burial was at Box Cemetery under the direction of Mallory Funeral Home of Sallisaw.

Mrs. Hutchings was born July 8, 1910 at Limestone, Arkansas to Christopher Casey and Narcissus Houston Casey and died October 25, 2000 at Sallisaw. On September 26, 1928 she married Garrett Hutchings, who preceded her in death. She was a cook, a homemaker, and a member of Vian Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hutchings came to Oklahoma at the age of eight. She moved to Box and worked on the farm while attending school at Box, Walters, and Carlile. She was very proud of the grades she attained in cooking school and worked at Carlile School for 28 years. She was active in the Vian Freewill Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher for 28 years. She was known and loved by many of the citizens of this area as she was of extremly kind heart with soft-spoken kind words for all she met.

Mrs. Hutchings was also prededed in death by her parents; a son, Bill Hutchings; a daughter, Angela Elaine Hutchings; two sisters, Nettie Noe and Creasie Stone; a brother, Ira Casey; and three grandsons, Billy Hutchings, Joey Phillips, and Neal Venable.

Survivors include four daughters, Wilma Phillips of Ft. Smith, Virginia Garrison, of Muskogee, and Wanda Bennett and Linda Venable both of Vian; a sister, Vera Stewart of Shafter, California; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and a host of friends that will surely miss her.
