william was born in union county, ga. he was one of seven children born to calvin and sarah catherine hensen houston. he grew up in limestone valley, newton county, arkansas on the houston homestead.
he enrolled in the u.s. army feb. 12, 1863 at fayetteville, arkansas. he was discharged as corporal of co. c, 1st regiment arkansas infantry volunteers august 10, 1865.
williams service records show him as awol from jan.10,1865 to june 27, 1865. affidavits submitted by numerous men confirm he was shot in the line of duty, whereby, he was reinstated.
on jan. 13,1867, he was married to lucretia alabama cooper hampton, the widow of james hampton, who died in the civil war.
william and cress had nine children. after she died, he moved from limestone valley to vian, oklahoma, where other members of his family had settled. later, he moved to pontotoc county and lived with his son jack. he died at the age of 84 of paralysis of the throat. he is buried in allen.
