Marjorie was born in Lowesville on Sept. 7, 1920. She grew up attending Piney River Baptist Church and was baptized in Piney River. She was a 1939 graduate of Averett College, later, James Madison University, and she began teaching in elementary school in Rockingham County.
During World War II, she worked at the shipyard in Newport News, where she met the love of her life, Warren B. Jessee, who was attending the Apprentice School. After Warren returned from service with the Army in Japan, they married on Feb. 14, 1947, and returned to the family farm in Lebanon.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Thomas Ewin and Marjorie Massie Harvey, lifetime residents of Lowesville; and nine brothers and sisters. Her brother, Herbert Harvey, went to his eternal home in heaven on New Year's Day 2010. She is survived by three sisters, Roselle Mayes and Francis Reynolds, of New Port News, and Tessie Mays, of Amherst. She also is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Becky and Bo Bolinsky, of Salem, and Ann and Lin Heltzel, of Chesapeake; a son and his wife, W.B. and Kim Jessee, of Memphis, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews.
Marjorie taught in Amherst County Public Schools and also for many years at Lebanon Elementary School, where she was a much-loved and sought-after teacher. She faithfully served Green Valley Baptist Church for many years in several roles, leading Vacation Bible School, teaching Sunday school and directing WMU. Her infectious laughter and the wonderful food from her kitchen delighted her family and friends through the years.
A funeral service was conducted Dec. 18 at Green Valley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating. Burial followed at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Green Valley Baptist Church. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff, nurses and certified nurse assistants at Snyder's Nursing Home in Salem, for the compassionate and loving care given to our mother.
Combs Funeral Service, of Lebanon, was in charge of arrangements.
