A Life Well Lived: Our Mom's Obituary February 2, 1919 – March 12, 2016
Tessie Magnolia Harvey Mays died peacefully on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Fairmont Crossing in Amherst, Virginia. She lived 97 wonderful, fulfilling years. When you think of our mom, there are four words that come to mind: Jesus, family, church, and Amherst. Those four dominated her thoughts and her life. She had an unwavering faith and love of Christ and shared that love with everyone she came in contact with. She placed Bible verses all around wherever she was and loved spending time with her family and her church.

She was born, raised, and lived almost her entire life in Amherst County except for the last three years when she stayed with her daughter, Margene in King George, Va., and her last five months at Fairmont Crossing. But make no mistake, Amherst was her home. And more importantly, Heaven is now and forever the home she longed for and is now experiencing. There is one big family reunion going on now with all 13 Harvey children, her husband, her parents, and her Mays family now back together for the first time.

Tessie was born on February 2, 1919, to Thomas Edwin and Margie Massie Harvey at her parent's farm that overlooks Piney River in Lowesville, Amherst, Va. She was born the middle child with seven brothers, Massie, Fulcher, Julian, Billy, Sumpter, Herbert, and Garnett; and five sisters, Bertha Phillips, Maxine Jones, Marjorie Jessee, Roselle Mays, and Frances Reynolds.

She graduated from Fleetwood High School in Nelson County where she played basketball and won a state championship with her sisters and cousins. After graduating from Fleetwood High School and Phillips Business School in Lynchburg, she worked at Dominion Rock Quarry and Brown's Office Supply as a secretary and bookkeeper. She met her husband-to-be, Jack Mays, while finishing her schooling at Phillips. They married on March 25, 1939, at Pleasant View parsonage by the Reverend Scarborough. After the wedding, they moved into the house that Jack built on Thrashers Creek Road, and she started teaching school at Coffeytown during World War II. They were married for 42 years before Jack passed away on May 8, 1981.

They were the parents of two sons, Jack and Harvey and one daughter, Margene.Tessie was a member of Piney River Baptist Church where she was very active in the WMU and missions. She had also served many years at Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for decades and worked with WMU, GA's and Acteens. In her early years of marriage to Jack, she attended Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church where she worked with the youth. Visiting and helping people in her church and community was such a major part of her life.

Her surviving family includes children, Jack Mays and wife, Linda, Harvey Mays and wife, Sandy, and Margene Hughes and husband, George; seven grandchildren, Carmen Johnson and husband, Aaron, Devin Mays, Christy Chichester and husband, Steven, Caley Mays, Daniel Hughes and wife, Elizabeth, Timothy Jack Hughes and wife, Catherine, and Chris Hughes; four great grandchildren, Graham, Caleb, and Cole Johnson, and Marilyn Carpenter-Hughes; sisters-in-law, Gerry Harvey, and Jean H. Gardner; nieces, nephews, and other family members … too numerous to list.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m., today, Monday, March 14, 2016, at Piney River Baptist Church 1190 Woodson Road, Lowesville, Va.A Celebration of Tessie's Life and Faith will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Piney River Baptist Church by the Rev. Jason Canipe with burial to follow in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery, 650 Thrashers Creek Road, Amherst. A luncheon reception for the family and close friends will be held back at Piney River Baptist Church after the burial concludes.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Fairmont Crossing in Amherst and Wanda Olson of King George for their loving care and support.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Piney River Baptist Church.
