John J. Christopher Altman, born about April 1849 in Williamsburg County, SC, PROBABLY was a son of Margaret Altman, born about 1828. [His maternity is not 100% proven.]

In the 1850 census, Margaret was the only female Altman of childbearing age in her father's household, which included one-year-old John J. C. Altman.

Shortly after 1850, Margaret had three daughters: Sarah Elizabeth, c. 1852; Hester A., Jan 3, 1854, and Mary D., Apr 15, 1855. The father of each daughter is unknown. (Mary was my great-grandmother. -Roger Lambert)

Between the censuses of 1860 and 1870, Margaret married a widower, Reuben Marlow.

John J. Christopher Altman married Liza Jane Ward, born about 1857 in Williamsburg County, SC.

Eliza applied in Dec 1919 for a widow's pension for the service of her husband John Altman in the Confederate army, Ward's Battalion, Captain Johnson, I Reg. She stated that he died March 1906, that she was born in 1858, that she and John were married in 1872. She applied from Coward, Florence Co., SC, where she had lived since Jan 1904. Thus, John's death in 1906 probably occurred in or near Coward.
