A daughter of William and Martha (Temple) Hall, Martha Hall was born on February 19, 1869 on a farm west of Lizton, close to the Hall School House. She started school there when she was five, and later attended Central Normal College at Danville and Indiana State University at Terre Haute. She taught school for 13 or 14 years at the Montclair School, the Hall School and the Shockley School, all one-room schools in Union Township. She was a member of the Lizton Christian Church and taught in Sunday School classes for many years. Martha lived to be 97 years of age, dying on August 27, 1966. She married Solomon T. Ellis on November 30, 1899. They were the parents of four children: Elfia (Leach), Floris (Cole), Lyman Hall Ellis and Charlotte (Kincaid).

Mrs. Martha (Mattie) Ellis, one of Lizton's older citizens, died Saturday afternoon in the Golden Rule Nursing Home, Danville, at the age of 97. She was the widow of the late Sol T. Ellis who preceded her in April 1950. A native of Lizton, she was born Feb. 19, 1869, the daughter of the late William and Martha Hall. She attended Teachers State College, Terre Haute, and the former Central Normal College. She taught in the district schools of Union Township and, while teaching at Montclair School, she married the storekeeper there. She was wed to Sol T. Ellis, Nov. 30, 1899, at the home of her parents west of Lizton. They operated a general store in Lizton for 48 years before retiring. Services were Monday afternoon from the Lizton Christian Church of which she was the oldest member and active in the missionary and various organizations. The Rev. Paul Whitsett officiated with burial in the Lizton Cemetery. Survivors include three children, Dr. Lyman H. Ellis, Mrs. Elfia Leach, postmaster of Lizton; and Mrs. Charlotte Kincaid, a teacher in the Lizton School; two grandsons, Robert Cole, Seattle, Wash. and Rev. Garland Kincaid, Guadaljara, N. M., serving as a missionary there; a granddaughter, Mrs. Carol Hitch, of near Lizton; and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, Floris Cole, preceded her in 1955.
