From William & Elizabeth's daughter Becca Dannels (recalling her young life in about 1863): ..."Stories of Indian raids and massacres were very common and men took their guns with them when they went to church.
..."One time the word came to us that a band of Indians were coming. There was a small log church on my father's place and the settlers gathered there with their guns and provisions to wait for the savages. It is still plain to me…the men standing guard with their guns at the windows and my father kneeling in prayer holding my hand in his. But this fortunately was only a scare.
..."When I was (about) eight years old we were alarmed again and my father went out as a sentinel to watch. He contracted a cold and passed away a short time afterward. Two months later my mother followed, leaving one boy, ten, and we three little girls orphans. Relatives divided us among them and I went to live with my father's parents."
