Samuel (Sam) Lafayette Taylor died April 21, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Gaffney on Feb. 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Samuel Lafayette and Lillian Service Taylor. He graduated from Gaffney High School and was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a former deacon.

Mr. Taylor served as a former City Councilman and was a former president of the Chamber of Commerce. A former Rotarian, he was a Mason and member of American Legion Post No. 109. He was co-owner of Taylor Watson Furniture Store for 34 years.

Mr. Taylor was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, having received the European African Medal, Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Star and One Silver Star, three Overseas Service Bars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge.

Sam Taylor was married to Geraldine (née Phillips) Taylor of Gaffney. the Taylor's had one son, Samuel L. Taylor, Jr.

Samuel L. Taylor was a nephew of Ruth Isabelle Service Muse (my grandmother) and my mother's cousin.
