Revolutionary War - He fought on the Loyalist British side in the American War of Independence. Major in the 1st American Regiment (or Queen's Rangers (Cavalry) in 1782. He was severely wounded at the battle of Brandywine in 1777, and received a "pension for wounds."
He was for some time governor of Chester Castle, and in 1788 was Captain of one of six Companies of Invalides stationed in Guernsey. He afterwards became Major Commanding the 5th Royal Veterans. He is mentioned as a man of fine presence, and at the age of 75 years is said to have looked like a man of fifty.
He married 1st Jane Coutart, of Guernsey of Huguenot descent, who was born December 20, 1767, and died April 8, 1796. He had 6 children by 1st wife.
He married 2nd, June 12, 1804, Sophia Le Mesurier, who was born January 23, 1780, and died on March 8, 1860. He had 9 children by 2nd wife.
