George W. Barefoot was born about 1823 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. It was probably that section of Edgecombe County that later became part of Wilson County. He married Teresa Tomlinson about 1844. She was the daughter of John and Eleanor Tomlinson of Wayne County. Following Teresa's death, he married her sister Penelope sometime before 1850. He married his third wife Martha Eleanor Camlin about 1853. She was from Williamsburg County, South Carolina. George had at least six children from these three marriages: James Jackson, Larry George Washington, Rufus Bunyan, Chalmers, Mary Eleanor and Susan Isabella. He died on October 1, 1885, probably from pneumonia. His wife Martha Eleanor and daughter Susan Isabella died that same year. He was buried in the Barefoot family cemetery located on the north side of Contentnea Creek just outside of Wilson. In 1947, a total of 39 remains were removed from the cemetery during the widening of Hwy 301. The remains were reinterred in Maplewood Cemetery.
