David's parents were Joseph and Amanda (Nichols) Benny from Baltimore. After his marriage to Arminda Johnson they moved to Union Co., Pennsylvania to be near her family. David was a brush maker but later became a railroad worker. At some point in time he suffered a heat stroke which resulted in brain damage. After his wife left him with their youngest daughter Ida the other children who were unmarried were raised by either her relatives or neighbors. Arminda filed for divorce in 1890 but the proceedings dragged on for nineteen years until it was finalized. David spent the last three years of his life in a state hospital. His burial expenses were paid by the county.
