"On Feb 25, near Gradel thirty miles west of Ritzville, John Raugust and Odelia Jasmann were married at the home of the bride. The people in the community are Russians and booze and firearms are the usual accompaniments of their nuptial occasions. This one resulted fatally to Mrs Marie Johnke, a wife and mother of five children, one a babe at the breast. Henry Schell one of the wedding party was firing a revolver promiscuously. One shot fired at the ground was deflected in some manner and struck the woman killing her. The 17 year old boy was arrested by Deputy Sheriff McCollom of Ritzville and brought to that city, given a preliminary hearing before Justice Steffer on Friday and bound over in the sum of $2,000. He was later given a hearing before Superior Judge O R Holcomb and held in the sum of $5,000 on a charge of murder in the first degree. Bond was furnished and he was given his liberty. The authorities have arrested several others who carried fire-arms at the wedding and will take active steps to do away with the death dealing agents on similar occasions." "Jake Smith brought to town this morning the story of another shooting affray, which took place at the ranch home of F Jasmann, 22 miles southwest of town yesterday, just after a wedding ceremony in which Mr Jasmann's daughter was married to a young rancher named John Raugust. Two guests at the wedding were an 18 year old boy, son of Christian Hille, and Mrs Gottlieb Janke. After the wedding young Hille pulled a revolver and began shooting, and one of his missiles struck Mrs Janke in the back. Mr Smith was not an eye witness to the tragedy but he was informed of it by some of his neighbors and his story is lacking in some of the details. It seems that young Hille, who is known as a bad character, stole $5 from Mrs Janke's coat while she was attending another wedding in that locality a few weeks ago. He was later found out and forced to return the money. He has since cherished a grudge against her and it is claimed made threats against her life. He says his gun was pointed toward the ground when he fired and the bullet glanced and struck her but some of the people present believe he deliberately shot her. She died almost instantly.
