Daniel Janke of Marlin, born near Tabor, Washington on April 23, 1908, passed away at Odessa Memorial Hospital Nov 25 following an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Lincoln and Grant counties, attending country schools in and around the Odessa area, and farmed throughout his life until 1978 when he moved to Marlin. Mr Janke was an active member of the Marlin School Board and served on the Marlin City Council until last spring, when he retired. A member of Zion Congregational Church of Marlin until the doors closed, he attended Marlin Presbyterian Church until his final illness prohibited his presence. He was known in the area as a reliable dowser (water witcher), a sideline he followed for a number of years. He was married in November 1939 to Martha Speck of Fallon, MT. She survives at the family home, and other survivors include three daughters: LaVern Strawn of East Wenatchee, Ellen Schafer of Odessa and JoAnn Hardt of Marlin. He is also survived by six grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many cousins at Hanna, Alberta, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brother Ben, and by sisters Emma, Emelia, Lydia and Mollie. Funeral service was held for Mr Janke at United Congregational Church in Odessa on Nov 30, his son-in-law Charles Strawn and the Rev David Mann of Wilson Creek Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed at the Odessa Cemetery; Strate Funeral Home was in charge. Casket bearers were Laddie Schlimmer, Loren Totusek, Bobbie Engle, Robert Kuch, Dale Pfeifer and Jerry Starkel. ref: Scrapbook Obit
