Ruth Isabelle Service was the daughter of Robert Forest Service and the former Lula Love Barnhill of Gaffney, South Carolina. She was one of seven children: John Robert Service (1873-1894), James Roland Service (1874-1958), Mamie Estelle Service McCauley (1876-1962), Rachel Agnes Service Meeks (1876-1952), Lillian Service Taylor (1883-1980) and Samuel Grover Service (1887-1978).

Ruth Isabelle Service married Joseph Pressly Muse on October 29, 1919 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They meet while she was visiting a friend at Lander College in Greenwood – just across from granddaddy's sister's home. Soon after the wedding they moved to Spartanburg, SC. There they started a family which included Joseph P. Muse, Jr. (1923-2005), Marguerite Isabelle Powell (1926-2016 ) and Mary Eunice Gaston (1928-2021), my mother. In 1934, as my mother enter the 1st grade; they moved the family to Charlotte, NC where they saw their children grow. The world was changing quickly, but grandmother always had time for her children, her many niece's & nephews and all of her & his brothers & sisters.

Ruth Service Muse was very active at the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and as a member of the local Order of the Eastern Star, an organization established in 1850 affiliated with the Freemasons. She traveled to Washington, DC, Eastern Stars national headquarters for many Conferences of the Grand Masters. The charitable work she did through the Eastern Star and church, she continued in her daily life.

I know that her three children passed that trait on to my generation. I just hope we do the same. Grandmother Muse died on January 27, 1963, quietly at home after a long battle with cancer.

Gravesite Details

The birth date of Grandmother Muse is incorrect on her tombstone. The Service sisters never told the truth about their ages. But as shown, her father died in 1893; when she was age 5.
