Robert Forest Service was born on the 9th of November 1848 in the Goudeysville section, then part of Union District, South Carolina. He was the son of Robert Service and Mary Cameron Service, originally from Ballyeaston, County Antrim, Ireland. Robert was one of seven children, his brothers & sisters were: John Service (1830 – 1916), Elizabeth Service Spencer (1832 – 1911), James Service (1838-1901), Mary A. Service (1842-1931), Sallie Service (1844 – 1932) and Martha Isabelle Service (1849 – 1922). Robert Sr. was a farmer and raised his son to do the same. Like many people who first settled this region, The Service's were Scotch-Irish, who had left Ireland so they could enjoy the privilege of worshiping in accordance with the teachings of the Scriptures; thus Robert, Sr. and Mary raised their children to respect these principles.

On July 20, 1871, Robert Forest Service married Lula Love Barnhill, daughter of John William and Rachel Dunn Barnhill from Draytonville, South Carolina. This union between Robert and Lula produced seven children: John Robert Service (1873-1894), James Roland Service (1874-1958), Mamie Estelle Service McCauley (1877 - 1962), Rachel Agnes Service Meeks (1877 - 1952), Lillian Service Taylor (1883 - 1980), Ruth Isabelle Service Muse (1886 - 1963) and Samuel Grover Service (1887 - 1978).

Robert Forest Service farmed like his father, raising his children in the Goudeysville area until he died on Sept 20, 1893 and is buried in the Service Family plot at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, South Carolina.
