John Robert Service was born January 17, 1873, the son of Robert Forest Service and Lula Barnhill Service in Goudeysville, Union County, South Carolina. Known as Johnnie, he was named for his two grandfathers: Robert Service & John W. Barnhill. John R. Service was the brother of James Roland Service (1874-1958), Mamie Estelle Service McCauley (1876-1962), Rachel Agnes Service Meeks (1877-1952), Lillian Service Taylor (1883-1980), Ruth Isabelle Service Muse {my grandmother} and Samuel Grover Service (1887-1978).
John Service died October 28, 1894 and is buried in the Service Family plot at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, SC.
