Born the son of Andrew Nutt (1790 – 1854) and Jane B. Curry Nutt (1791 – 1857) in Lancaster Co., S.C.. He married Desdemona Ann Newberry (1817 – 1884) 18 Oct 1832 and they had at least eleven children, Samuel M Nutt (1833 – ), Elizabeth Jane Nutt (1834 – 1896 who married Young Marion Langford 1831-1916), Frances Caroline Nutt (1836 – 1895), Mary Loueazer Nutt (1838 – ), Martha Ann Agness Nutt (1840 – 1884), James Andrew Jackson Nutt (1842 – 1915), John Thomas Nutt (1845 – 1916), William Christopher Columbus Nutt (1847 – 1904), Robert Rudolphus Nutt (1849 – 1926), Choicy Rosaline Nutt (1851 – 1905), and Sofronia Pleasant Cricket Nutt (1854 – 1898). William was living in Marion County, Ga. by 1840 according to the Federal Census and remained there through the time of his death.
