Patrick Whitney died last Saturday at his home on Spring street after an illness of two weeks. The funeral was held at St. Francis de Sales church Monday morning at 9 o'clock and was attended by a large concourse of people. showing the esteem in which the deceased was held. Rev. A. J. Barron was the officiating clergyman both at the church and the grave. The bearers were grandsons of the deceased, Messrs. James, Francis, Joseph and Louis McDermott, Charles and Alfred Dwyer and Edward and John Whitney. Mr. Whitney was born in Soran, county of Longford, Ireland, in 1827. He left Ireland in 1844 and came directly to Bennington and since that time has resided here, almost sixty years. He was married in 1848 to Mary Gregory who still survives him. Mr. Whitney was the father of twelve children, six of whom are living, Mrs. Mary McDermott, Mrs. Frank Dwyer, Miss Catherine Whitney and John, James, and Patrick J. Whitney, all residents of Bennington. Mr. Whitney had the respect and love of all that knew him, was a loving husband and father, a good neighbor and friend. These qualities combined with a love for all that was good in public life, made him an ideal citizen, one we lay to rest with sorrow.
