Paul Winston Chittum, Sr., 77, of Fairfield, died Saturday, July 22, 2000 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Fairfield November 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Stuart A. Chittum and Maude Agnes Weeks Chittum.

Mr. Chittum was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church and served as a veteran of the Pacific Theater in WWII with the U. S. Navy. He worked on the OH River out of Pittsburg as a night captain on a sand dredge along with his young wife for three years and returned to Rockbridge County in 1950 to farm. He then worked in the Rockbridge County Sheriff's office from 1957 to 1986, retiring after 29 years.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Frances F. Chittum, Fairfield; daughter and son-in-law, Laura C. and Ronald L. Conley, Chesapeake; daughter, Nora C. Nash, Buena Vista; sons and daughters- in-law, Paul W., Jr. and Priscilla Chittum or Raphine, Mark J. and Rebecca Chittum, Natural Bridge; brother, Edwin W. Chittum, Norfolk; and two sisters, Elizabeth C. Burwell, Beaver, PA and Faye C. Webb, Hyattsville, Md.; three grandchildren, Ronnie Conley, Nicholas Chittum and Morgan Chittum. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000 from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Gunsalus officiating. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Rockbridge Area Transportation Systems, P. O. Box 774, Lexington, VA 24450. Pallbearers will be Bobby Day, Freddy Spence, Stewart Young, Randy Holland, Glen Henderson and Eugene Fitzgerald. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, VA
