Bertha Ellen (Baldwin) Rehling was a daughter of Henry Gilbert and Ellen Serepta (Fisher) Baldwin of Ada, Kansas. Bertha had an ancestry reaching back seven generations and almost 250 years in American history, to the Puritans of New England. Her Baldwin line of ascent is: Bertha (Baldwin) Rehling-8, Henry G Baldwin-7, Ezra-6, Elijah-5, Daniel II-4, Daniel I-3, Benjamin-2, Henry-1, the immigrant, who migrated to Woburn, Mass approximately 1640. Her father, Henry G Baldwin, was a Civil War Veteran who fought in a Vermont unit and was also a Kansas homesteader. Elijah and Daniel II Baldwin, grandfather and great-grandfather respectively, were both Revolutionary War veterans.

She married Fred Rehling, a German-born American, on Dec 20, 1894, and they had two children: Lloyd and Lois Rehling. They farmed in the area of Milo, Lincoln Co, KS; near where her parents had homesteaded in 1870.
