David was the 6th child of Reynolds and Abby Coombs Kenyon. He began his life in Mexico, Oswego, New York. Most of the family moved to Allegan County, Michigan in the 1850's, including David.
David married his wife Jane about the same time as his move to Michigan. He and Jane were the parents of 5 children: Israel S., Edna, Alta I, William J. "Willie" and Hattie B.
In June, 1861, David signed his draft registration papers in Juniata, Tuscola, Michigan. He is age 36, born in New York, a farmer. David is listed as Class C, as "so blind that he cannot recognize a person". David was exempt from the draft, but he chose to serve.
In the 1870 and 1880 census', they were living in La Harpe, Hancock, Illinois. David filed for a disability pension on February 17, 1891 in Illinois; his record lists him with the Michigan Volunteers.
On the 1900 Special Schedule, Surviving Veterans census, David is living at 420 W 34th St, Rio Grande, Colorado. He enlisted on 12 August, 1861 and was discharged on 16 April, 1863. Noted: loss of right eye. He served as a Private, for 1 year 8 months.
On the April 16, 1910 census, he is at the Colorado Soldiers and Sailors Homes, Precinct 14, Rio Grande, Colorado. He is listed as male, white, 85 years old, widowed, born in New York, father born in Rhode Island, mother born in Connecticut.
