MARGIE PAULINE GRESHAM MATTINGLY, 82, of St. Marys, WV, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 17. Margie was born in Moreland, KY and spent her childhood days in Lincoln County, KY.

She was a graduate of the Wood County Vocational School of Practical Nursing Program in Parkersburg, WV and completed her requirements for Registered Nurse at Hocking Technical College in Nelsonville, OH. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg, WV and as a Nursing Instructor at Colin Anderson Center in St. Marys, WV. She held several medical certifications and was extremely active in the community teaching First Aid, CPR and other medical courses to various groups. Her dedication to her profession and tireless efforts were recognized by community and medical leaders alike.

Margie was also a Notary Public and leasing agent in the oil and gas business in her early career. In later years, she and her husband, Robert, were the owners and proprietors of the Silver Spur Night Club in St. Marys, WV. During those years, she booked popular bands such as McGuffy Lane, Randy Travis, Alabama, Lee Greenwoood and the Gatlin Brothers. Always up for a new adventure and challenge, Margie enjoyed traveling and made many trips throughout the US and other parts of the world.

She joined her husband in Alaska while he worked on the Alaskan pipeline and traveled extensively throughout the Alaskan wilderness with great bravado and a sense of adventure. She especially liked fishing for salmon while in Alaska. A highlight for both of them, when the pipeline was completed, was returning to West Virginia by way of the very rugged and unpopulated Alcan Highway.

Margie also enjoyed bowling with her nursing friends in earlier days as well as deep sea fishing in the South and was a gifted musician who could play the piano by ear after hearing a song only once. Margie had a love for life and a spirit for fun and was also a great story teller with a wonderful sense of humor.

Margie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert Lee Mattingly, Sr., who passed away on September 7, 2010; her father and mother, Watt and Peachie May Gresham; brothers William, Dee, Edgar, Bus and Luther Gresham; sisters Nell Bracket, Catherine Manning, and Evelyn Atwood.

She is survived by her children Peggy Ware (Steven) of Mountain Lakes, NJ; Robert Leo Mattingly of Waverly, WV; and Mary Lynn Carlton (Gary) of Placerville, CA; grandchildren Jeff Mattingly, Nina DeCoster (Will), Spencer Ware, and Ben Mattingly; step grandchildren Matthew Carlton (Lisa), Dan Carlton, and Becca Carlton; great granddaughter Georgia DeCoster and great grandson Crosby Sebastien DeCoster; and step great granddaughters Jillian and Allison Carlton; sisters Christine Grant and Lucille Smith, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home, Hustonville, KY on Friday, October 22 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., with funeral services by Brother Jonathan Grizzell following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Moreland Cemetery in Moreland, KY.

Pallbearers are Robert L. Mattingly, Jr., Benjamin Joseph Mattingly, Steven M. Ware, Spencer Mattingly Ware, Gary Carlton, Robert C. Gresham, James Logan Harmon, and Glenn Lanham. Honorary pallbearers are Howard Douglas Grant and Thurmond Atwood.

Margie was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a kind and compassionate person who could light up a room with her smile and laughter. May she rest in peace.
