ROBERT LEE "BOB" MATTINGLY, 86, St. Marys, W.V., died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Mattingly was born in Akron, Ohio, and spent his formative years on Frogtown Road in Marion County.

He was a United States Naval Veteran of World War II serving on the USS William C. Miller in the South Pacific as a cook/welder First Class. During his tour of duty, he fought in several battles including the Battle of Iwo Jima. After he concluded his military service, he was the owner and operator of five restaurants in Lebanon, Bob's Coney Island Hot Dog Stand, The Bun Box, Bob's Steak House, House of Blue Lights and Whistling Pig.

He spent most of his working years as a welder for Union Local 798 of Tulsa, Okla., working on many projects all across the US, including the Atomic Power Plant in Portsmith, Ohio; the Saint Lawrence Seaway; and the Alaska Pipeline, where he spent several years on the project. He also owned and operated Sky Go Concrete Pumping Company as well as Dr. Blacktop Sealcoating Company.

In later years, he and his wife, Margie, were the owners and proprietors of the Silver Spur Night Club in St. Marys, W.V. Mattingly enjoyed visiting with military friends; especially attending annual Navy reunions and sharing stories from the service days.

An excellent welder who "did the craft proud," Bob constantly worked on welding projects and enjoyed other entrepreneurial business ventures. He also enjoyed boating with his family in various rivers and lakes in West Virginia and deep sea fishing in the south.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Thomas and Della Mattingly and brother, Beneford Mattingly.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 62 years, Margie; children Peggy Ware and husband Steven of Mountain Lakes, N.J.; Robert Leo Mattingly of Waverly, W.V.; and Mary Lynn Carlton and husband Gary of Placerville, Calif.; grandchildren Jeff Mattingly, Nina DeCoster and husband Will, Spencer Ware and Ben Mattingly; step-grandchildren, Matthew Carlton and wife Lisa, Dan Carlton, and Becca Carlton; great-granddaughter Georgia DeCoster and step-great-granddaughters Jillian and Allison Carlton; sister, Beatrice Lanham of Lexington; a niece, Donna Sue Peden; and a nephew Glenn Lanham.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland. The United States Navy and American Legion Post 18 presented Military Rites at Moreland Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice. W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home, Moreland, was in charge of arrangements.
