John emigrated to America in 1854 and settled in Monroe County Illinois. In 1859 he married Sarah Mary Grittman also a native of Germany. In 1869, the couple with their four children moved to Cloud County Kansas. John and Sarah Mary subsequently had four more children. Of their eight children, the two youngest died before reaching adulthood. Both boys died the same year. A loss that John never recovered from.
John & Sarah were some of the earliest settlers in the Solomon Valley and in 1879 they applied for a homestead of 162+ acres. In 1900, his widow sold the homestead for $4500, she and their adult children signed the documents as HERGER. Later, Sarah Mary and son William joined the other adult children who had already moved to Saline County and adopted the name Hesher as did all subsequent generations. The attached obituary is from THE GLASCO SUN (Sunday), Mar. 24, 1883, first year of that newspaper's publication.
