Ethel Blanche (Castle) Swan was the first of 8 children (Ethel, Arthur, Kathryn, William, Laura, Mildred, Velma and Jesse) born (Jan 1, 1892 at Mapleton, IA) to Mary Elizabeth (Buckland) and Justice Castle. Surviving are Kathryn (Sacramento, CA), and William (Meeker, CO). Ethel lived in Mapleton until her teens, then moved with her family to Turin, IA where she completed all 8 grades in school. Her parents – farmers – then moved to New Castle, CO, in 1912, and there, a few years later, her father died. Her mother died in 1964 at the age of 92. For awhile, the family lived in Kennebec, IA (1908-1910); while there, Ethel met and married Peter Swan, whose parents had come from Copenhagen, Denmark. They became married Jan 1, 1910, in Whiting. In 1913 the couple moved to the Albaton, IA area and in 1946 occupied the small home just East of Skien Lutheran church. (Kathryn Sandidge)
The couple were blessed with 5 children – Mabel (Smith); d. 1982), Glen, Ester (Bakke), Elmer, and Everett. They joined the Skien congregation in 1928 under Pastor Roseland. Peter, who was confirmed in a granary of the Gullickson farm across the road from the home (E. of Skien) which Ethel last occupied, served as Skien's treasurer for many years. Peter Swan died March 21, 1957, in Onawa.
Ethel, who during her last years, received monthly communion at her home, affirmed her faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She grew and matured in that faith through a gradual, life-long process, without any dramatic experiences. She was confirmed at Skien and was a faithful, active member of this congregation- having had her children Baptized, Confirmed, and nurtured there in the Christian faith and having also been an active member of it's women's group. Her hobbies included tatting (making delicate, hand-stitched lace), quilting and writing letters. Indeed, she was very proud of all her children, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren (total count: 5, 15, 34, and 20 respectively) and, until her last couple of years (when her strength became diminished), she proudly sent them all greetings and gifts on their respective birthdays and at Christmas time and was knitting and sewing items for the youngest members until her fingers became too weak for the task. Her secret for a good, long life? "Trusting God and asking him daily for strength and good health. It helps to have a circle of loved ones to love and to be loved by." She was a fine example and image of Christly service, Love, and quiet strength to the end – a model worthy of imitation by us all. She died Sunday February 1, 1987 at the Burgess Memorial hospital in Onawa, IA, which she had entered January 19, 1987.
