George Gardner Cottrell was the son of Solomon Gates Cottrell 1803 and Prudence Gardner.

His father Solomon moved from Brookfield, Madison County, New York, to Alden, Erie County, New York by 1840.

His father had married Prudence Gardner, the daughter of Sullivan Gardner. It is very likely that Sullivan Gardner knew John Cottrell, the father of Solomon Cottrell. John Cottrell was a lay preacher, and Sullivan Gardner was an active church goer. It is likely both were associated with the Seventh Day Christian church in Brookfield. Both lived in the Brookfield, Madison County area, and both had come from Rhode Island. Sullivan Gardner moved from Brookfield to Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York about 1837. It is very likely that through this connection that George married Lydia Ann Naramore, who lived in Cherry Creek, Chautaqua County. The couple were married in Cherry Creek on January 29, 1854. In addition, eventually three of George's brothers married three of Lydia's sisters.

The couple lived at first in New York, either in Alden, Erie or Cherry Creek, Chautauqua. The couple moved to the Winnebago county area of Wisconsin, along with many of George's brothers and sisters and his parents. They first moved to Waukau, Winnebago County in 1859. They lived in parts of Winnebago County, according to reported birth places of children in Nepeuskin, Winnebago 1861, Waukau, Rushford, Winnebago 1864, Eureka, Winnebago 1867. George continued his occupation as a cooper. In 1870 they bought a farm in Poysippi, Waushara County where they lived until 1896.

Later, about 1896, the couple moved to Birch, Lincoln, Wisconsin. In 1908 they moved to Lynchburg, Virgina to live close to some of their children there. Lydia died there in 1910. George returned to Lincoln County, Wisconsin, where he lived the rest of his life.

Two of their children were born in New York, three were born in Winnebago County in the 1860's and three were born in Poysippi. Two of the children born in Poysippi, Paul and Willet died in 1880 of diphtheria. There were 2 other children that died as infants. The others all lived to adulthood.

Children:

George Henry 1854, married Anna Larsen, lived in Morris, Shawano, Wisconsin, four children.

Florence Caroline 1859, married Elmer Orlando Bullock, lived in Rock Falls, Lincoln, Wisconsin, and Brookville, Campbell, Virginia, seven children.
