Opal Virginia Roberts Hammond, age 96, of Atlanta, died July 30, 2010, in a tragic automobile accident in Douglas Co. She was born March 8, 1914, in Ben Hill, GA, and was a lifelong resident of that community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Ray Hammond, brothers, James Roberts and Grady Roberts, Jr., niece Mimi Gantt, and nephew John Roberts. She is survived by sisters, Mildred Fitzgerald and Carolyn Gantt, nephew Greg Fitzgerald, and nieces, Kaye Stanfielld, Carol Pruett, and Lynne Garrett. She is also survived by several grand nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hammond worked for many years in the procurement division of the Dept. of Defense until her retirement in 1973. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Ben Hill Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and was also a member of the Air Force Assoc. and the Amer. Defense Preparedness Assoc. She especially enjoyed the many years she spent as an active member of the Braves 400 Club. A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11:00am at Westview Cemetery.
