Johanna (went by Hannah) Rothrock was the tenth of eleven known children of Peter Rothrock Sr. (1746-1829) and Catharina Mueller (became Miller) Rothrock (1749-1803), who married on 09 Oct 1770 at York, York County, Pennsylvania. Peter Jr. was born at the Moravian community of Friedberg, then on the border of Stokes and Rowan Counties, North Carolina; now (present-day) on the border of Forsyth and Davidson Counties, North Carolina.

Hannah married Stephen N. Gates (1791-1860) on 19 Oct 1817 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Hannah and Stephen were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Catherine Gates Clodfelter (1818-1856)
2. Anna Elizabeth Gates Hedrick (1819-1857)
3. Allen E. Gates (1825-1864)
4. Mary Ellen Gates Rehr (1830-1878)

Some records show a fifth child, John H. Gates (1852-1938), but I believe this to be a mistake.
