SCHAEFER – Funeral services for Joseph P. Schaefer, 1301 6th Ave NE, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mayer Funeral Home, where friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

187 Joseph P. Schaefer 1976

Joseph Peter Schaefer was born April 8, 1897, at Riceville Iowa, the son of Mathias and Apollonia Schaefer. A lifelong area resident, he had made his home at 1301 6th Ave. NE, Austin, for 44 years at the time of his death, at the age of 79.

On July 15, 1919, Joseph was united in marriage to Celestina Winkels at Adams, Minn. To this union five sons and four daughters were born.

Joseph retired from the Hormel Co. in 1969. He was a member of the Eagles Club and the congregation of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Joseph P. Schaefer died on Tuesday morning, June 15, 1976, at St. Olaf Hospital, following surgery. He is survived by five sons, Raymond, Sylvester, Wilfred, Bernard and Leo P. Schaefer, Austin; four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Whalen, Mrs. Jack (Helen) Sershen, Mrs. Daryl (Rosemary) Danley, Austin, Mrs. Theodore (Dorothy) Schlichter, Albert Lea; 40 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Adams, Mrs. Christina Teaut, St. Paul, Miss Clara Schaefer, Austin. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters, one brother, three grandchildren and one son-in-law.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. June 17, 1976, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Rev. David Rivers officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Donald Whalen, Robert Schlichter, Roger Schaefer, Michael Sershen, Randy Sershen and Raymond Schaefer Jr. serving as pallbearers. The Mayer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

SCHAEFER – A sincere thank you to relatives, friends and neighbors for the many cards and memorials, and for the food brought to our home and to the church at the time of the illness and death of our father, grandfather, and brother, Joseph P. Schaefer. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses on second floor, third floor, and intensive care. To the priests of Queen of Angels, St. Augustine, St. Edwards a sincere thank you for their many acts of kindness extended to us. Thank you too to St. Winifred's Unit for the delicious lunch.
