Mary Virginia (Mariva) Arledge Bast, age 89 of Midland, Tx (Former resident of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Monday, September 27, 2010.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M., Thursday, September 30, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater at 1311 McCaulley with Rev. Dana Mayfield officiating. Arrangement are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Mariva Bast was born on December 19, 1920 in Maryneal, Texas and spent her childhood in Roscoe. She graduated from high school in Roscoe in 1938, as valedictorian. She attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene and then graduated in 1942 from the University of Texas in Austin.
She met her husband, C.L. (Bud) Bast, a lieutenant in the Air Force, at a dance in Victoria. They were married on September 1, 1942 in Dallas, Texas after she graduated from UT. They lived in several locations during the war, including Sherman, Texas and Fort Myers, Florida.
After the war, they moved to the Arledge Ranch outside of Blackwell, Texas. Later, she and Bud moved to Sweetwater with their twin daughters. The family continued ranching and spent their weekends at the ranch and summers in South Dakota. Bud passed away in 1994. In 2007, due to health issues, Mariva moved to Midland where her daughter Kay lived.
Mariva took great joy in living, believing that it is up to you on how you live and how happy you want to be. More importantly to her was to be active and meet people.
She loved to watch sports especially tennis, needlepoint, and play duplicate bridge, her true passion. In the 1960's, she became the first person in Sweetwater to be named a Life Master in duplicate bridge. Mariva remained a competitive duplicate bridge player throughout her life, which helped her settle in Midland after she moved.
A member of First Presbyterian Church of Sweetwater, she said her faith helped her level of confidence and happiness, and contributed to her optimism. In Sweetwater, she had especially great fun with her longtime lady friends in the LDS. In addition, throughout her life Mariva found great joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She lived well and worked hard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.L. (Bud) Bast, her parents, Zella Pope and T.E. Arledge, one sister, Emily Arledge Bridgeford, and three brothers, Roy, Henry, and Billy Arledge.
Mariva is survived by daughter Kay Bast Bird, wife of Charles Bird of Midland, grandchild Kathy Taylor, wife of Craig Taylor, great grandchild Kathryn Taylor of Houston, Texas; daughter Ann Bast Corley, wife of James Corley of Fort Worth, grandchild Ann Corley Motheral, wife of Bill Motheral, great grandchildren James Carl (Jay) Motheral and Nicholas Bast Motheral of Fort Worth, and grandchild James Keith Corley, husband of Kathy Corley of Evanston, Illinois.
Honorary pallbearers are her niece and nephews: Jack Arledge, Jimmie Arledge, David Bridgeford, Billy Bruce Bridgeford, William Henry Arledge, Tom Arledge, Bruce Arledge and Ann Arledge Carroll.
