Father: Leonidas Hamlin Kennard 26 Oct 1869 - 28 Nov 1948
Mother: Frances Catherine Frankland Kennard 29 Sep 1875 - 10 Nov 1953
Married to Hyrum John Barson, Logan Utah LDS Temple, 23 Dec 1931

Joanna was born 5th child of 9, at Riverside, Utah. Father and mother married in Salt Lake Temple, and all the children were married in temples except Gordon Keith.

Joann's paternal great grandfather was baptized in 1838 and received his endowment in Nauvoo Temple. He was in the vanguard, which went ahead of the main body of Saints and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley ahead of Brigham Young. He served at least three missions, one to England

Brigham Young once said to him, "Brother Gleason, if you could make money as well as you can preach, you'd be a rich man." He was imprisoned in the Liberty Jail with the Prophet Joseph Smith. Joann's great great grandfather, Isaac Chase, once owned the farm, together with Brigham Young where the Liberty Park (SLC Utah) now is. There is a monument to his memory standing in Liberty Park today.

On her other side, her maternal great-grandparents were in the hand cart company which walked all the way from Nauvoo to the Salt Lake Valley. Joann's father filled two missions in the Society Islands in Tahiti, the 2nd time as mission president. He was an officiator in the Logan Temple for 23 years. The Kennard family line goes back to 1627 in America, and includes Pricilla and John Alden.

Joann was educated in Riverside and Logan schools, and was graduated from Budge Hospital in Logan as a registered nurse. She met H. John Barson in Logan when John was in the Cache Valley Hospital for an appendectomy, with Joann as his nurse. They were married 8 months later on 23 Dec. 1931, in the Logan Temple. They made their first home in Clarkston where their first five children (Carol B, Vaudis B, Farren Kennard B, Clyde John B and LaFae B) were born.

When Clyde was one month old, Joann was called to serve as president of the Relief Society, in which capacity she served for several years.

The Barson family moved from Clarkston to Logan where they lived for eight months (1944.) In May 1945 they moved to North Hollywood on the advice of John's doctor. In May 1950 they moved to Lennox (Inglewood). There two more children were born: Frances Louise B and Duane Kay B. Joann served in the Lennox Ward as Sunday School teacher, M.I.A. teacher, Relief Society teacher, and Primary teacher.

Carol and Vaudis have been graduated from high school and Carol went to BYU for on year. Ken and Clyde are in high school and Fae is in 6th grade. Frances Louise is 4 ½ and Duane is almost 3 years old.

Carol played violin in the high school orchestra. She has served as chorister of Jr. Sunday School, Primary, and M.I.A.

Ken was president of his quorum when he was a Deacon. Clyde is now president of the quorum. Ken is a Star Scout, Clyde a First Class Scout. They are both Explorer Scouts now. Carol, Vaudis, Ken, Clyde and Fae have all had lessons on various musical instruments. John, since coming into the Lennox Ward has served as counselor in the bishopric and he is now on Stake and ward Ward Teaching committees. All of the family are full tithe payers and faithful in all their duties.
