Gene was born in Pocahontas and moved to Des Moines in 1945 where he graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. He worked at Horner Waldorf for 26 years and was also a part time bartender at J & B Tap, D & T Tap and the Stroll Inn. He was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed visiting with his many friends. He will be remembered as a truly loving and caring family man.
Gene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Donna; son, Dan; four daughters, Chris Gilchrist, Tammy King, Lisa (Keith) Neal and Becky Gilchrist; grandson, Scott Neal; five granddaughters, Heather (Mike) Mapes, Amy (Kevin) Kelly, Lori (Mike) Goodwin, Kari Neal and Kelsey King; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Austin Mapes, Madison Kelly and Taylor Goodwin; five brothers, Jim, Bill, John, Corliss and Ken Gilchrist; and seven sisters, Kay Deurr, Darlene Sattler, Corrine LaFleur, Jeanette Moore, Nancy Closom, Jan McMahan and JoAnn Schaffer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Arrah Gilchrist; two brothers, Keith and Don Gilchrist; and one sister, Helen Beaver.
