James was the son of Charles Gilchrist and Florence Hinckley. He married Arah Richards on 26 MAR 1917 in Pocahontas, Pocahontas Co., Iowa. They were the parents of Sarah Jeanette, James, Hana, Helen, Willard, Darlene, Dorland, Corinne, Collis, John, Nancy, Keith, Kenneth, Joan, Janice, and Jene.

August 17, 1961 - Rolfe Reveille - Jim Gilchrist, 70, died August 8 in the Stewart Nursing Home, Des Moines, after being in ill health for some time. He was the son of the late C.W. Gilchist of Pocahontas and of Mrs Gilchrist, now a resident of Laurens Nursing Home.

He was born in Pocahontas county and was among the first employees in the Pocahontas county engineers office. He later farmed in Palo Alto county, then returned to Pocahontas where he was employed by the county maintenance. Mr Gilchrist was also a driver for the star mail route out of Pocahontas for a time.

Survivors include 16 children and four brothers. Funeral services were held August 10 from the Pocahontas Methodist church with burial in Summit Hill cemetery, Pocahontas.
