LESTER A. GOOKIN

Lester A. Gookin, son of Joseph and Lulu Adams Gookin, was born Dec. 16, 1902, on a farm near Russell. He passed away at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1981, at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 28 days. He had been in failing health for the past six months.

He was united in marriage to Ruth Mauk on Nov. 19, 1924. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1974. To their marriage two sons and one daughter were born, Leland Gookin of Fairfield, Kenneth Gookin of Story City, and Betty Umbenhower of Chariton.

Lester spent his entire life farming around the Russell and Chariton communities until retiring in 1975 and moving to Chariton.

He attended Mount Carmel Church, Beulah Chapel Church and most recently was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Chariton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Dwight.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; sons, Leland and Kenneth; daughter, Betty; six grandchildren, Denise Gookin-Nelson of Nevada, Mo., Myron Gookin of Fairfield, Marsha and John Gookin of Cedar Falls, Alan Umbenhower and Lisa Umberhower-Smith of Chariton; and five great-grandchildren, Meredith, Hilary and Brent Nelson and Bradley and Chad Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Herman, of Roundup, Mont., and a sister, Nora, of Denver, Colo.

Lester was an honest and helping man. He enjoyed farming, automobiles and visiting with neighbors and friends, but the greatest joy of his life was his family. He was a friend to everyone and will be missed by all his family, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at the Fielding Funeral Home on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1981, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Virgil E. Schickell conducting. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church.
