Frances "Fannie" May Field was the third of ten children born to Thomas Elswick Field (1843-1912), a Confederate veteran, and his wife Lillie Caroline Wilson (1856-1937). Her paternal grandparents were Elswick Sherwood Field and his wife Guilianna Lindsay, and her maternal grandparents were Harrison Wilson and his wife Ann Shuford. Fannie never married. She was a school teacher for many years.
