Adele Barrett DeFord, 93, the widow of Charles Gordon DeFord, died Aug. 23, 2000, at the Ballentine Home.
Mrs. DeFord graduated from Maury High School and Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Md. She was a professional violinist active for 50 years in the musical life of Norfolk. She was a member of the Norfolk Symphony from 1921 to 1960, the WTAR Salon Orchestra and the Feldman Quartet. After the days of live music on radio, she became office manager at WTAR-TV.
Other memberships include D.A.R., Colonial Dames, the American Federation of Musicians and a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include a niece, Betty Simmons Shamiss; great-nieces and -nephews Kate, Adele, David and John Patterson; and a cousin, Caroline Ransone of Washington, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Ballentine Home on Granby Street. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Freemason Street Baptist Church, 400 E. Freemason Street, Norfolk, VA 23510. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, provided information.
