Austin was the 3rd child of 15 of Richard Milton & Nancy Ann (Parrish) DeLong.

Austin, with his family headed west in the 1850s. Tracking their route a sister (Eleanor) was born in Iowa about 1854, a brother (Franklin) was born in Missouri about 1857 & finally a sister (Nancy) was born in Nebraska about 1858. By the July 1860 census the family had arrived in the Salem Precinct, Richardson Co., Nebraska Territory.

Following info from a Richardson County, Nebraska history book:

DeLONG FAMILY HISTORY (first part of article listed under Austin's father Richard Milton DeLong) Austin DeLong, farmer, was born May 5, 1846, at Marion County, Indiana. On January 22, 1864, at the age of eighteen he enlisted at Des Moines, Iowa, for Civil War duty as a private in Company K, 34th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteer.

He mustered out as a private November 14, 1865, at Indianapolis, Indiana. He had been shot accidentally in the arm during his service, and his arm was left permanently bent at the elbow.

Austin married Ann (Scott) McMahon, daughter of Joseph and Lucinda (McCorkle) Scott on August 12, 1866, at Holt County, Missouri. They continued to live in Craig, Missouri, for some time before going to Marshall County, Kansas, and Richardson County, Nebraska. Their children: Thomas, born April 27, 1867, died in 1875; James Franklin, born December 1, 1869, married Florida Nash on June 16, 1908; Victoria Luvenna Ellen, born December 14, 1871, and married to William Sherman Alexander, son of Abraham and Mary (Huffman) Alexander on April 15, 1889, at Falls City, died April 13, 1909, at Marshall County, Kansas; Joshua Milton, born November 26, 1873, and married to Sarah Jane Nash on March 14, 1895, died January 4, 1934, although the gravestone says January 4, 1924; Harvey Lee, born December 12, 1875, and married to Mary Curtis, died in the 1930's in Texas; Emma May born May 13, 1877, died in 1881, when her sled ran into a tree; Emmet Austin, born September 25, 1879, and married to Nora Smith, died Aug 8, 1941; Elbert Parish, born September 20, 1881, and married to Fannie Jane Shafer, died Jun 2, 1937; and Rosetta, born October 29, 1894, and married to Jake Carpenter, died in Colorado on March 29, 1944.

Austin had three step-children. Phylurie Jane McMahon, born at Dawson, Nebraska, February 22, 1859, and married to Jachariah Taylor Randle on June 17, 1875, at Holt County, Missouri, where she lived most of her life, died at Falls City, Nebraska, on June 30, 1936. Lucinda McMahon was born January 20, 1861, and married first to Charles Foster. Charles McMahon, born January 13, 1864, and married to Anna Perry, died January 30, 1928, in Brown County, Kansas.

The last home Austin and Ann had, he built in 1900, in Richardson County on their land located in Section 16, Township 3, Range 17. Austin willed this home and property to go to his son Elbert after Ann's death, and at Austin's death he also willed Elbert his thoroughbred racehorse, Buckline. Austin died July 6, 1907, and Ann, May 19, 1917.

Austin, Ann and two of their sons, Josh and Elbert, are buried in the Harris Cemetery in Barada. Their grandsons, Sherman Alexander and Roy Alexander, as well as other descendents, are also buried there.

Many of their descendents live in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, as well as many other states, including Minnesota, Florida, and California.
