Leazer Baumwoll

Louis was born in Kossow, Austria and arrived in New York on March 24th 1890, aboard the SS Noordland. We don't know if he came alone and if he had other family with him . He was an alteration tailor for Bergdorf Goodman and we know he had a shop.

We know he was married to Sarah Lefkowitz/Goldberg Baumwoll and had 2 children with her; Morris in 1895 and Edith (Yetta)in 1899. Sarah was 29 years old when she died, leaving two young children.

Louis brought his brother Koppel over, and we now know (Thanks to Find a Grave Volunteers Lori Weber and Jean Purdy Lewis) he had other brothers who came to America: Wolf, Sam, Vultchur (?). and Ber Leib/Benjamin(?).

It is unclear how Sarah died, but there are family tales.
The 1910 census shows he remarried to Gussie Goldberg (Dec 25, 1905) His first wife's younger sister, and had (Sarah)Sally, Lil, Flo and (Hyman)Harold.

"Gussie" died of TB January 6th, 1916 at 29 years of age and Louis, unable to care for his children placed Harold and Sally in the Hebrew Sheltering Arms Guardian Society in Pleasentville,NY which at the time was considered a progressive cottage style orphanage mainly for Austrian/German Jewish children.

His youngest child,Flo who was 5 years old, went to live with a family Flo recalled as "Aunt Annie"(The wife of Koppel Baumwoll).

Sadly because of political pressure to "Americanize" the Jewish children, the orphanage participated in "Orphan Trains" sending the children out to the hinterlands of the US- to Kansas and Oklahoma for indentured "adoptions". Louis did not allow Harold or Sally to be removed, but he did not reinstate them to the family home for 10 years.

We know that in the latter years of his life he resided with his daughter Edith Elkins and her husband Jack in Brooklyn

Sarah Lefkowitz Baumwoll** was the mother of Morris and Edith
