Maria was born in Tating, Kr. Ederstedt, Schleswig-Holstein. She was the daughter of Arrien Peters and his wife, Anna Hinrichs. She married, 28 Oct 1849 at Tating, to Peter Johannsen. This couple had ten children, five of whom died in infancy. Of the ten children only two were boys and only one reached adulthood. He, too, died young. Peter and Martha left Germany aboard the ship "Gellert" and arrived in New York on November 12, 1888. They came immediately to Denver and lived the rest of their lives in Denver.
