Peter was born in Tating, Kr. Eiderstedt (at that time), Schleswig-Holstein, son of Peter Johannsen and his wife, Martha Peters. He married, 28 Oct 1849 at Tating, to Maria Elisabeth Peters. This couple had ten children, five of whom died in infancy. Of the ten children only two were boys and only one reached adulthood. He, too, died young. Peter and Martha left Germany aboard the ship "Gellert" and arrived in New York on November 12, 1888. They came immediately to Denver and lived the rest of their lives in Denver.
