Joseph P. Cancelmo Sr., 88, formerly of 54 Northboro St., a steelworker for 30 years, and long active in the Knights of Columbus, died Wednesday at Mediplex of Millbury.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Rose (Pirozzi) Cancelmo; two sons; three daughters; three sisters, Rose Prosser of Milford, Palmina Gianette of Worcester and Dina DiCarlo of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A grandson, Anthony Farraro of Worcester, died in 1987. He was born in Worcester, son of Bonifacio and Beradina (Commito) Cancelmo, and lived here before moving to Millbury recently.
He was once a sergeant in the Massachusetts National Guard. He was a member of the Junior Commandos during World War II.
Mr. Cancelmo worked in the rod mill at American Steel & Wire Division, U.S. Steel Corp., for 30 years, retiring when the plant closed in 1971. He was then a maintenance worker part-time at Bradlees department stores, retiring in 1987. He once worked for several area construction companies. He was an organizer and Scoutmaster of Troop 44, Boy Scouts of America.
He was a life communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann's Church and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America. He was a third-degree member of Pope John XXIII Council, Knights of Columbus, and a fourth-degree member of Bishop O'Reilly Assembly, K of C. He received the assembly's Achievement Award in 1988 and became an honorary Knight in 1996. In 1988, he received a key to the city from Mayor Jordan Levy.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home, 179 Shrewsbury St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann's Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Members of Alhambra Council, Knights of Columbus, will meet there at 7 tonight to conduct a ritual.
