Louis (Lou) N. Cudworth, 86, of Oak Crest Village in Parkville, MD, died June 22, 2010 of congestive heart and kidney failure at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Towson, MD. Mr. Cudworth was a retired VP of Maintenance, Repairs, and Construction for Moran Towing Company, He was born March 16, 1924 in Manteo, NC to Vance and Ina Cudworth and was raised in Norfolk, VA. Following high school he began working in various shipyards where he learned many of the skills that would serve him later in his career. It was here that he met Aileen Daniels who was attending Norfolk Business College and they were married in 1942. >
During World War 2 he served in the Merchant Marines, traveling around the world delivering supplies and armament for the troops. It was during this time that he sustained an injury to his right elbow that would restrict many physical activities for the rest of his life. Following the war he joined Curtis Bay Towing Company (later to become Moran Towing Company) in Norfolk as an engineer responsible for operation and maintenance of ocean going tugboats serving east coast ports. Mr. Cudworth would spend the rest of his working career in the tugboat industry. >
In 1956 he relocated to Philadelphia, PA to take a promotion as the port engineer responsible for maintenance and operation of 8-10 working tugboats. >
He moved to Baltimore, MD in 1966 and took the position of VP of Maintenance, Repairs, and New Construction, responsible for repairs and maintenance all of the tugboats in the ports of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Norfolk. In addition, he was responsible for the design and construction of new tugs added to the fleet. >
Mr. Cudworth retired in 1986. He was well respected throughout the tugboat industry by his peers as a tugboat systems specialist and man who could be counted on to keep the tugs running.
One of his sons recalls, "I always remember Dad working crazy hours when a tug was out of commission and then coming home with grease all over his clothing. Mom used to get upset with him for wearing a suit to work and then getting in the middle of an engine teardown or other maintenance activity without changing his clothes. Even after he was promoted to the managerial level he couldn't resist getting his hands dirty with the crews. It was his life and what he did best." >
Following retirement Mr. Cudworth and his wife moved back to Manteo, NC for about 10 years. They then moved to Bel Air, MD to be closer to their sons and grandchildren. >
Mr. Cudworth became a born-again Christian in 1957 while attending a Billy Graham crusade in Philadelphia, PA. He spent much of his spare time serving in the church as a deacon, working on various committees, and singing in the choir. He was a firm believer in giving back to God a tithe of the material blessings God had blessed him with. He spent many years with the Gideon's ministry that purchases and distributes Bibles throughout the world. Late in his career he made a mission trip to assist with a problem with a large diesel engine used to power a Christian radio station on the island of Bonaire off the coast of South America. >
He enjoyed participating in sports activities with his sons as they were growing up, both as a spectator and assisting with coaching. One of his sons recalls "Dad often said it was the happiest time of his life, teaching us how to play ball at an early age and then as we got older travelling around and watching our games. I think he regretted that he was no longer capable of doing some of those things himself after he hurt his elbow in the war." >
Mr. Cudworth is survived by his wife Aileen, two sons, Curt and Carl and their wives Susan and Sally, respectively, of Bel Air, MD, three grandsons, Aaron of Bel Air, MD, Ethan of Baltimore, MD, and Jordan of Maui, HA, and one sister, Jean of Wanchese, NC. He was predeceased by four other sisters Lois, Wilma, Ina Burns, and Iris Lee. >
Funeral service was held at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Wanchese, NC Saturday, June 26; interred at the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese. Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, NC -www.twifordfh.com or e-mailed to Aileen Cudworth at [email protected].
