Joseph was the son of John Carnes b 1720 MD, who was the son of Joseph Carnes b 1687 CT, who was the son of Thomas Carnes b 1660 CT. Joseph was born in Frederick Co. Maryland. He married Comfort Ann Cash 12 Nov. 1783 in Goochland Co. N. C. They lived in Granville Co. N.C. in 1790, Mechlenburg Co. N.C. in 1800, and Carroll Co. in 1830.

He was a private in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War.

This memorial was placed here for him, but he was not buried here, it is believed that he is buried near the old Carnes log cabin on the Clinton Nature Preserve.
