Machinist Mate Second Class (MM2/c) Jeremiah Daniel Dennis enlisted in the United States Navy in July 1939. He served briefly with his brother Edward aboard USS RANGER (CV-4). He joined USS JUNEAU (CL-52), an Atlanta-class light cruiser, in February 1942. The ship and her crew participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign in the South Pacific. On Friday, November 13, 1942 JUNEAU was struck by a Japanese torpedo, there was a tremendous explosion and the ship sank in less than a minute. Jeremiah Dennis, all five Sullivan brothers, plus 804 of their shipmates were killed. Jeremiah's name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila City, Philippines.

Sadly, Jeremiah's brother, Edward Guy Dennis, Jr. was killed about seven weeks later on January 1, 1943 when his PBY Catalina flying boat crashed near Guadalcanal.
