An Aviation Pilot First Class (AP1/c), Edward Guy Dennis, Jr., was killed on Friday, January 1, 1943. At the time of death he was a PBY-5A Catalina pilot serving with Patrol Squadron 72 (VP-72). Edward died along with three other servicemen, when their Catalina crashed during a violent maneuver to avoid hitting a small boat while landing off Lunga Point, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. His remains were later returned from Guadalcanal and interred in Golden Gate National Cemetery on March 4, 1948 in Section D, Site 240. On November 30, 1953, he was removed from Section D and reinterred in Section R, Site 26 on the same day.

Sadly, Edward's brother, Jeremiah Daniel Dennis was killed in action about seven weeks earlier on November 13, 1942 when the light cruiser, USS JUNEAU (CL-52) was sunk in the vicinity of Guadalcanal.
