Son of Mary Blue and Richard Dukes. He was a farmer and stock raiser. He was reared on the farm, received a common school education, and followed agricultural pursuits with marked success. The farm on which he resided was one of the finest in the state. He owned 1,400 acres of land, after having divided among his children 560 acres. Married to Laura Ann Spangler. They were consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was steward and trustee. In politics, Mr. Dukes was a Republican. He was trustee and clerk and was also treasurer and school director, and was actively interested in the Grange movement.

Married on 25 Feb 1902 to a lady named Harriet M. Cayton.
