James was the son of Julius Throckmorton and Rachel Cole. The U. S. Federal Census Mortality Schedule, 1850-1885, list James Throckmorton as having died during the year ending May 31, 1880. The month that he died was stated as June. His age was 84 and the cause of death was old age and Rheumatism.

James married Ailsey (Alice) Tilley about 1819 and they were the parents of seven children:
Robert Thomas (1820-1870), Susannah (1824-1909), Rachel (1826-1870), Mary John (5-13-1828/3-16-1892) Julius Hade (1830/2-7-1877), William Lipscomb (1834-1894) and James C., born 1837 and died Dec 25, 1862 at Guinea Station during the Civil War.

James is known to be buried in the cemetery on the hill behind the Throckmorton Homeplace. His grave is among the many that are marked with fieldstones.
