Billy Throckmorton was a Private in CO H 22 NC INFANTRY, CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY.
He was a farmer and also built rock chimneys that can still be found in the Snow Creek area of Stokes County.
While building one of these chimneys, one of the rocks fell on his foot, causing an injury that never healed. His leg had to be amputated, which was done at home by a doctor using a flaming pine knot on either side of the bed to provide the necessary light. One of these was held by his wife and the other by his daughter, Lettie, my grandmother. Lettie later told that both the doctor and the patient were fortified by whiskey which the mother and daughter both refused.

A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
